Composition
The BIMP-EAGA focus areas are the entire Sultanate of Brunei Darussalam; Irian Jaya, Maluku
and all the provinces of Kalimantan and Sulawesi in Indonesia; the states of Sabah and Sarawak
and the Federal Territory of Labuan in Malaysia; and, Mindanao and Palawan in the Philippines.
These focus areas are geographically distant from the central capitals were national governments
are based. Likewise, geographic proximity among the focus areas was seen as a one leverage that
would propel the development of the sub-regional cooperation.
In addition, the BIMP-EAGA cooperation was also a mechanism to restore the active economic
links that was founded on very strong cultural and historical affinity between Mindanao,
Sulu and Palawan, and the neighboring islands in the sub-region dating back in the early
part of the 17th Century.
