The recent integration of BIMP-EAGA to ASEAN has opened the doors for the establishment of partners outside the subregion. Through the ASEAN, the 1st BIMP-EAGA Leaders Meeting was successfully conducted during the ASEAN Leaders' Summit in October 2003 in Bali, Indonesia and the BIMP-EAGA Investment Promotion Seminar in 21 November 2005 in Tokyo, Japan.

BIMP-EAGA has magnified its coordination with the ASEAN through the development of specific guidelines on pilot-testing as an instrument to fast-track ASEAN Measures in BIMP-EAGA. On 14-15 June 2006, the ASEAN Secretariat-BIMP-EAGA Consultation Meeting was conducted in Jakarta, Indonesia wherein specific policy, strategic and technical issues regarding ASEAN-BIMP-EAGA cooperation and coordination were discussed. Particularly, it aimed to gain deeper understanding on the ASEAN Secretariat's mandate, consult on how to pilot-test ASEAN agreements in BIMP-EAGA, and exchange information on best practices on project implementation mechanism.
